PSD Semester 2: First Impressions

BooksAfter having attended at least one lecture
of all my semester 2 subjects now, I think
this is a good time to reflect on the first
impressions I’ve received from these
subjects.

The subjects I’m studying this semester are:

  • Object Oriented Programming
  • Internet Technologies
  • Computer Systems
  • Usability

Object Oriented Programming is pretty much a continuation of last semester’s Algorithmic Problem Solving.
It’s still taught by Andrew Cain. This means the same style of presentation and labs etc. Should take no effort easing into the way this subject will work. The only major change in this subject is that we have changed from using the Pascal language to C#. We will no longer create programs from scratch as our assignment, but make changes to the programs that Andrew provides us with.

Internet Technologies is a very interesting one. Although so far the subject hasn’t provided much that I already know, I’m excited because there’s also alot of stuff to come that I don’t already know, and I’m very excited to learn about.

Computer Systems is going to be our operating systems class. Finally I get to learn some stuff about Linux. Can’t wait :)

Usability. I can already tell that this subject was the one they needed to put in the PSD simply because if it wasn’t part of the PSD, the PSD would be too much fun. And the idea of a FUN course is just obsurd right? LOL nah I’m definately overreacting. I do see how this subject does apply to the main focus of the course, I just can’t help but feel like it’s the replacement for IBIS.

So that’s my overall first impressions of the second semester. I really look forward to gaining alot of useful information from the first three subjects mentioned.

I’m excited :)

Get Perpendicular

DiskOnce again I was lurking PGTour forums and someone posted a link to an interesting advertisement at Hitachi’s Global Storage Technologies website.

The advertisement was very interesting. It proposes to be able to store up to 10 times as much data on the same size disk by standing the bits on end hence being perpendicular.

Very interesting concept and funny advertisement to watch :) Make sure you turn the sound up.

Dwain has a gallery

GalleryJust recently proxiteam.com was moved to a linux server. This was awesome because it meant I could easily run some image gallery software and have a nice gallery to store all my photos.

I was really getting sick of the slow web-interface of the add-filled photobucket I had. So this was great news :)

Gallery COULD have been installed when proxiteam.com was on the Windows server but from what I’ve read, it’s so hard/impossible that it’s not worth the trouble.

So now I have my gallery :)
You can find it here: http://dwainbunker.com/gallery
The software is called Gallery 2. Gallery 2 and its requirements (you also need image processing software such as imagemagick or similar) can be found at http://gallery.menalto.com/
I havn’t used it a whole lot just yet as I’m fiddling around with it and getting familiar still, hence there is only like 1 album with 3 pictures in it at the moment.
But so far it seems great. It is all running thanks to help from my mate Dale who always helps me with all this stuff, he’s a great admin.

Something Funny

I was lurking PGTour forums just now and stumbled across a guy who had simply the funniest signature I’ve ever seen!

It looked like this:

  • I understand that Scissors can beat Paper, and I get how Rock can beat Scissors, but there’s no fucking way Paper can beat Rock. Is paper supposed to magically wrap around Rock leaving it immobile? Why the hell can’t paper do this to scissors? Screw scissors, why can’t paper do this to people? Why aren’t sheets of college ruled notebook paper constantly suffocating students as they attempt to take notes in class? I’ll tell you why, because paper can’t beat anybody. A rock would tear that shit up in 2 seconds. When I play rock/ paper/ scissors I always choose rock. Then when somebody claims to have beaten me with their paper I can punch them in the face with my already clenched fist and say “Oh shit, I’m sorry I thought paper would protect you, you asshole.

LOL just gold :)

Sounds like it’s probably a quote from some comedian or something… anyone heard it?

This enabled me to finish the night with a smile. I hope (if anyone reads this damn blog) someone else finds it funny too.
